LILIAN JARVIS

Former principal dancer with the National Ballet of Canada

Held August 2004

BioSomatics is a portable system for physical fitness through stretchcloth exercises. Founded on the principles of the Martha Graham dance technique, BioSomatics consists of a series of deep stretch and strengthening exercises that help to alleviate strain and muscular aches and pains by improving the mechanical and structural condition of the body. The core belief of the technique is that many ailments as well as many injuries and health-related problems result from accumulated tensions and poor postural habits, and that correcting these conditions is essential to bodily comfort and superior fitness and health. The overall goal of BioSomatics is to promote genuine fit-ness, which it views not as a condition that results from activities, but as one that prepares the body for activities.

COMFORT AT YOUR COMPUTER

Body Awareness Training for Pain-Free Computer Use
-
Paul Linden, Ph.D.

Many people experience strain, fatigue and pain from working at computers. However, if you understand your body, you can use a computer safely and comfortably. The key is to adapt your workstation to your needs rather than adapting your body to the requirements of the machine.

By developing greater body awareness, relaxation and postural efficiency, you can reduce strain, fatigue and pain from computer use and enhance your work performance. In this workshop, you will learn how to sit (or stand) comfortably at your computer, how to use movement breaks for strain reduction, and how to set up your computer workstation to enhance your comfort. The special requirements of laptop use will also be covered.

The primary content of the workshop will be practical, step-by-step exercises which show how to work with breathing, muscle tone, posture, movement and intention to develop body awareness, power, love, effective boundaries, and safety.

The workshop will also include case study examples and a systematic explanation of the theory underlying the awareness and empowerment work. For more information on the training approach, see the downloadable papers and the e-book at www.being-in-movement.com

Paul's book, Comfort at Your Computer - Body Awareness Training for Pain-Free Computer Use is available through the Resources section of this site.

WINNING IS HEALING

Body Awareness and Empowerment
for Abuse Survivors
-
A Workshop for Helping Professionals

Paul Linden, Ph.D.

Held June 2004

People who have been abused or raped generally contract and numb their bodies to reduce their awareness of the trauma. However, by not living in their bodies, survivors become weakened and less able to resolve their trauma.

In this experiential workshop, professionals working with trauma survivors will learn how to use exercises focusing on breathing, muscle tone, body use, movement flow, intentionally, and self-protection to develop the capacity for clear, powerful, loving and effective ways of living. This process of empowerment offers abuse survivors a way to reclaim their bodies and move past the trauma.

The somatic methods that will be taught derive from Being in Movement ® mindbody training and the martial art of Aikido, and they form a unique and effective addition to the traditional methods of trauma work commonly available. The work is based on the ideas that powerlessness is the core of the trauma wound and that growth and healing must be anchored by tangible experience of success in controlling the environment.
